Researchers at Texas A&M University have discovered something remarkable. They gave old mice, equivalent to 60-year-old humans, two puffs of a special nasal spray. Within weeks, the mice's memories improved significantly and stayed sharp for months afterward.
The spray contains tiny particles called extracellular vesicles, which are released by human neural stem cells. Inside these particles are microRNAs, molecules that control how genes work in the brain. These microRNAs act like master switches, helping to regulate many brain functions.
The treatment targeted two major causes of brain aging: the NLRP3 inflammasome and the cGAS-STING pathway. Both of these cause the slow inflammation that damages the brain over time. The spray helped reduce this harmful inflammation and restored energy production in brain cells.
The mice showed improvements in memory tests within weeks, and these improvements lasted for months. The nasal spray method is particularly exciting because it travels directly to the brain without needing to cross the blood-brain barrier, which usually blocks large molecules from reaching brain tissue.
While these results are promising, the researchers must complete safety tests before trying the treatment in humans. Lead researcher Dr. Ashok Shetty believes this approach could one day help people avoid memory loss as they age. However, all the current research has been conducted in mice, and much work remains before human trials can begin.
