On April 1, 2026, a rocket launched from Earth carrying four astronauts towards the Moon. This was the Artemis II mission, the first time humans had traveled to the Moon's area since the last Apollo mission in 1972. This modern trip used artificial intelligence as a co-pilot to ensure the crew's safety.
The ten-day journey took Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen farther into space than any previous crew. They traveled 406,771 kilometers from Earth, breaking the distance record set by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970. The mission also achieved important firsts: Koch was the first woman to travel near the Moon's surface, and Hansen was the first Canadian to make this trip.
Traveling so far into space presents big challenges. Communication signals take over a second to travel between the Moon and Earth. Because mission control cannot give immediate instructions, the Orion spacecraft needs self-operating computer systems. These systems manage life support, adjust the flight path, and detect problems without waiting for commands from Earth.
The company Lockheed Martin provided Orion with a special system called System Invariant Analysis Technology. This software checks data from many instruments to find unusual patterns. It can analyze data in one hour, which would take a human about 240 years.

Space weather is another danger. To protect the astronauts, machine learning programs analyzed solar data to predict solar particle activity a day in advance. NASA combined these AI predictions with physics calculations to monitor the astronauts' radiation exposure during the flight.
While advanced software guided the spacecraft, human engineers worked from Houston, Texas. At NASA's Johnson Space Center, a graduate student named John Graham Reynolds helped create an important tool. Reynolds and his team built a machine learning program for the Orion Mission Evaluation Room. This tool helped flight software managers quickly find and summarize technical information when teams needed to solve problems during the mission.
Reynolds, who returned to graduate school after working as an engineer, saw his software help the historic flight. He said, "Helping support a mission that carried humans farther from Earth than ever before was an incredible experience. I am a small part of NASA, but I know my small steps help achieve a much larger leap for mankind."
