A private jet at Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport was ordered back to the VIP Terminal just before it could depart for Maputo, Mozambique. Onboard, Angelo Pandeli, a 55-year-old Australian man, saw his escape plan fail. Indonesian immigration officials noticed a passenger, using the name GAM with a Brazilian passport, had no entry record or permit. This raised suspicions, and the flight was stopped. When officers searched the jet, they found Pandeli hiding in the lavatory.
Authorities learned Pandeli is a key figure in an international organized crime group, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP). He is wanted by Interpol and is believed to be a former leader of a motorcycle gang, suspected of smuggling large amounts of drugs into Australia. The arrest was the result of international cooperation.
Pandeli was one of four foreign passengers on the flight, which also had three crew members. His attempt to escape using a fake passport led to his capture. After his arrest, Indonesian authorities took him into custody and deported him to Australia to face charges. He has been banned from entering Indonesia for life. His attempt to flee in a private jet with a false identity ended in an airplane bathroom.
