A violent prison riot occurred at Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of 27 people. The incident began on Monday, July 6, 2026, during the morning meal service, when tensions between rival criminal groups escalated into chaos. More than 100 other individuals were injured and required medical attention.
The prison, located near the capital city of Colombo, was severely overcrowded, holding up to 2,400 detainees when it was designed for about 650. This overcrowding is a major issue in Sri Lanka's prison system, which is operating at nearly four times its intended capacity.
The violence reportedly started the day before, on Sunday, July 5, with clashes between factions over drug operations. Some prisoners had informed management about attempts to smuggle drugs, leading to an initial skirmish that killed two people.
The situation worsened the next morning. Inmates armed themselves with makeshift weapons and attacked staff. Reports indicate that prisoners overpowered guards, took their firearms, and used them inside the prison. They also broke into the medical clinic, consuming pharmaceutical supplies. Security systems like cameras and metal detectors were destroyed.
Law enforcement officers waited outside the prison until a formal request for assistance was received, following protocol. Seven correctional officers and 20 inmates died in the riot. The death toll increased to 27 after an injured inmate died later.
Local hospitals were overwhelmed. Negombo Hospital treated over 100 injured people and received 23 bodies. Some of the most seriously injured were transferred to Colombo National hospital, with several requiring emergency surgery.
In response, authorities transferred about 700 inmates to other facilities. Investigations have been launched by the Criminal Investigation Department and the Colombo Crimes Division, along with a special committee to examine the systemic failures. The Justice Minister expressed sorrow and accepted responsibility, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.
