About 3.7 billion years ago, a river flowed into a large lake on Mars. Today, this area is a dry place called Jezero Crater. Since February 2021, NASA's Perseverance rover has been exploring this area, looking for signs of Mars' watery past. Now, the rover has found something important on the surface of rocks: the complex chemical parts of life.
In a study published on June 24, 2026, in the journal Science Advances, scientists announced that Perseverance found macromolecular carbon. This complex organic material was found in two mudstone samples. The research team said that the measurements showed many different signals, "making this the most robust organic detection in Jezero crater."
The rover made these measurements in July 2024 while exploring an old river valley. This channel, which is about a quarter-mile wide, once carried water into the crater. In a rocky area, Perseverance used its special tools on the mudstones.
To find the carbon, the rover used an instrument called SHERLOC. This tool uses a laser to map organic molecules. The laser analysis showed that the organic carbon was inside the rock samples and also on their outer surfaces.
Scientists are excited because this is the first time macromolecular carbon has been found on an exposed rock surface on Mars. Kyle Uckert, a scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said it was the shallowest detection of organic matter ever found on Mars. He thinks these organics might have been exposed to the environment recently, or protected by minerals.
The rocks also had surprising chemical details. One mudstone had organic carbon connected to minerals. The other sample showed carbon linked to different materials. These details help scientists understand how the carbon was preserved.
The location of the discovery is also interesting. The carbon was found near patterns on a rock that look like leopard spots. On Earth, similar patterns are sometimes linked to ancient life. While there could be other explanations, the presence of organic carbon provides important context for these possible signs of past life.
This finding is not just about one crater. NASA's Curiosity rover previously found organic carbon in another crater far away. Finding similar complex carbon in a different place suggests that organic material might have been common on ancient Mars.
However, scientists caution that finding carbon does not prove that life existed on Mars. Organic carbon can form without life. It could come from meteorites, underground heat, or volcanic eruptions. Uckert explained that the rover's tools cannot determine the exact origin of the compounds. "We cannot state that biology played any role in the organic carbon described in this study," he said.
Still, the discovery is a crucial piece of the puzzle. On Earth, similar carbon structures are often found in very old rocks. Ashley Murphy, a scientist who led the research team, explained its importance. "Carbon is the primary building block for life on Earth, and all living things are made up of complex organic macromolecules," she said. Sometimes, these macromolecules are the only evidence left of ancient microscopic life.
The search for organics on Mars has a long history. Fifty years later, the rocks of Jezero Crater are starting to reveal their secrets, offering a look into a time when Mars was very different.
