For over ten years, a robot explorer has been climbing a large mountain on another planet. On June 19 and 20, 2026, NASA's Curiosity rover took pictures of a valley on Mars. The pictures showed a large area covered in geometric shapes in all directions. The rover had entered an area called Valle Grande. As it moved up, its cameras showed a surface broken into thousands of small polygons. Each shape is about four to eight centimeters wide. Together, they look like a giant honeycomb on the ground. These patterns cover the land, even around a small hill called Miraflores. The rover has seen similar cracks before, but they were very small. This is the biggest area of these shapes ever found on the mission. The team on Earth was surprised by the size of the discovery. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California built the rover and controls it. Ashwin Vasavada, a scientist on the mission, said the rover has shown many amazing things. "We have seen many interesting landscapes, but this area of polygons surprised us," Vasavada said. "We are studying the shapes and chemistry to understand how they formed."
Scientists are now studying the chemicals and shapes to find out how they were made. In the past, Curiosity found cracks caused by wet mud drying. However, these new honeycomb shapes might have a different cause. They could be from big changes in temperature. Or, they might have formed when heavy dirt pressed on wet ground, pushing water out. This discovery adds to what scientists have learned since Curiosity landed on August 5, 2012. The rover has been climbing Mount Sharp, a tall mountain, since 2014. Long ago, this mountain had rivers and water. The rover has found rocks, crystals, and important organic compounds, which are the building blocks for life. Scientists are still learning if these were made by life or by natural processes. This shows that ancient Mars could have supported simple life. Now, after fourteen years, Curiosity has shown that Mars still has big surprises. The rover continues its climb, looking for more clues.
