In Pukhivka, a town near Kyiv, a house was destroyed by a Russian drone attack early on August 8, 2026. A grandfather, grandmother, and their three-year-old grandson died in the attack. The boy's mother and older sibling survived but were injured and taken to the hospital. A neighbor trying to help was also hurt.
This attack was part of a larger Russian assault. Russia launched 151 drones across Ukraine overnight, and air defense systems destroyed 135 of them. Russia also used six ballistic missiles against civilian areas in Kyiv. These missiles are very fast and hard to stop. Ukraine's Patriot air defense system, supplied by the United States, is effective against them, but Ukraine is running low on interceptor missiles.
Global military supply issues, partly due to tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran, mean fewer defensive weapons are available for Ukraine. The missile attacks in Kyiv caused fires and at least one death. Similar attacks happened in ten other Ukrainian regions.
Experts say Russia is combining drones and missiles to overwhelm Ukraine's defenses. Sven Coppens of Plan International noted that launching multiple missiles quickly gives civilians less time to find safety. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the attack on the house in Pukhivka was intentional, as it was a normal home. The war continues, and nights remain dangerous in Ukraine, with global shortages affecting local safety.
