In the 1990s, workers near Chichester in West Sussex found a small, triangular bone piece. For many years, it was stored with other items from the Boxgrove archaeological site. Recently, scientists studied it more closely and found it is a 500,000-year-old tool made from the bone of an elephant or mammoth.
This discovery, published in Science Advances, is the oldest elephant bone tool ever found in Europe. The artifact is about 11 centimeters long and made of hard outer bone. Scientists cannot tell the exact species or bone part, but it came from a very large prehistoric animal.
Using microscopes and 3D imaging, scientists saw small stone pieces and marks on the bone. These showed it was a "retoucher." Early humans used it to sharpen stone handaxes by hitting them to create a sharp edge.
Elephant bone was good for this because it is strong but softer than stone. This allowed ancient people to make precise tools. The people who made this tool were likely early humans called Homo heidelbergensis. They showed great skill, using the bone while it was still fresh to shape it.
"This discovery shows how clever our ancestors were," said Simon Parfitt, a lead researcher. "They knew about local materials and how to make good stone tools."
Finding elephant bones in England from this time is rare. These animals were not common there. The bone was likely brought to the site on purpose. Scientists are unsure if they hunted the animal or found a dead one.
Dr. Silvia Bello said that using a rare material to make tools shows advanced thinking. While older elephant bone tools exist in Africa, this find changes what we know about Europe. It shows that early humans were skilled and planned carefully half a million years ago.
