The image shows a weathered older man mid-stride on a debris-strewn road, the volcano roaring behind him, the mortar raised above his head as a desperate shield.
The work was carried out by the University of Padua's Digital Cultural Heritage Laboratory, which combined artificial intelligence software with photo-editing techniques to translate skeletal remains and excavation data into a realistic human likeness. The researchers describe the portrait as a scientifically grounded interpretive model rather than a definitive likeness.
The man was found at the Porta Stabia necropolis, just outside the ancient city walls. Objects recovered with him included a ceramic oil lamp, a small iron ring still on his little finger, ten bronze coins, and the fractured mortar. Researchers believe he died early in the eruption, struck down during the heavy fall of lapilli, the small pumice fragments that pelted the city for hours.
