On August 5, 2026, a large part of a SpaceX rocket crashed onto the Moon's surface. The rocket part, which was as tall as a five-story building, hit the Moon at over 5,400 miles per hour. This crash released as much energy as almost three tons of TNT. Usually, the Moon is hit by natural space rocks about every six days, but this impact was caused by human-made space junk.
The object was the top part of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It was launched in January 2025 to take two private lunar landers into space. After its main job was done, the rocket part stayed in orbit around the Earth, following the Moon's path. Over time, sunlight and gravity slowly changed its path. Scientists think that solar activity and gravity forces caused the rocket part to head towards the Moon.
Independent astronomers first noticed that the rocket was going to hit the Moon by looking at tracking data. NASA later confirmed their calculations. The impact happened near the Einstein and Bell craters on the side of the Moon that faces Earth.
Experts said the event was not dangerous. A NASA specialist stated there was no danger to Earth. NASA planned to track the rocket part for training and study the crater that was made for scientific research.
When the four-ton rocket part hit the Moon, several international instruments were ready to observe. South Korea's Danuri orbiter took pictures of the area before and after the crash. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter also photographed the new mark on the Moon.
The impact created a crater about 20 to 30 meters wide. The crash also threw up a large cloud of dust. Scientists observed the dust cloud from Earth and found chemicals like sodium and lithium.
This crash gave scientists a chance to study the Moon, but it also raised concerns about space junk. Scientists warned that more objects in orbit could lead to problems. They suggested that people should be more careful about how they dispose of old rocket parts. NASA and SpaceX are now discussing ways to avoid similar accidental crashes in the future.
