Scientists at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute made an unexpected discovery. A molecule created to block coronaviruses was tested against the Ebola Zaire virus. The molecule proved effective, showing strong antiviral abilities against this dangerous virus. Ebola Zaire has caused many outbreaks globally and leads to severe bleeding fevers with high death rates.
Surprisingly, the molecule also worked against the Lassa fever virus, which is a different type of virus found in West Africa and causes thousands of deaths each year. This finding supports a new idea in medical research. Usually, companies create medicines for one specific virus. However, Decoy Therapeutics designed their molecules, called D-MAVs, to target common weaknesses in different virus families.
This platform blocks a key part of how viruses enter cells, a mechanism used by both coronaviruses and filoviruses. Dr. Barbara Hibner of Decoy Therapeutics explained that their molecule worked because both virus types use the same method to infect cells. This shows their strategy for creating broad-spectrum antiviral drugs is valid.
Decoy uses a special system called IMP3ACT, which uses computers and machine learning to design these molecules quickly. Although the first molecule was made for coronaviruses, these new results encourage the company to explore more possibilities. They are now developing new molecules to fight multiple viruses like Ebola and Lassa fever. There is a great need for such treatments, especially as outbreaks continue and current options are limited.
