Deep beneath the North Atlantic Ocean, instruments anchored to the seafloor have been measuring ocean currents for nearly twenty years. What they have found is clear: one of Earth's most important ocean systems is weakening.
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, is a massive underwater conveyor belt. It carries warm water from the tropics northward, where it cools and sinks, then returns south as a deep, cold current. This system controls weather patterns across entire continents. It is why London has mild winters while Canadian cities at the same latitude freeze.
Researchers at the University of Miami studied data from four monitoring stations across the western North Atlantic. They found the same result everywhere: a steady, large-scale decline in the current's strength over nearly two decades. This is not a temporary change, but a continuous weakening.
A weaker AMOC can shift weather patterns and cause more extreme storms, changes in rainfall, and colder winters in some regions. Another study projects that the AMOC could weaken by about 51 percent by 2100 if current emission levels continue. This prediction is significantly larger than earlier forecasts.
Scientists have long warned that the AMOC is a potential climate tipping element. This new research provides direct measurements rather than indirect clues, making it much more reliable evidence of what is actually happening to our oceans.
