Now, scientists have recreated this phenomenon on Earth. They used powerful lasers to break down plastic, which has a similar chemical makeup to the gases on these planets. They subjected the plastic to very high temperatures and pressures, similar to those inside ice giant planets.
This caused the carbon atoms in the plastic to turn into tiny diamonds. "It was one of the best moments of my scientific career," said scientist Dominik Kraus. The team used special X-ray pulses to see exactly how the diamonds formed. These laboratory diamonds were very small, but the diamonds on Uranus and Neptune are thought to be much larger.
Recent studies suggest that diamond rain might happen on many planets outside our solar system. This discovery also helps explain the strong magnetic fields around Uranus and Neptune. Scientists believe the sinking diamonds affect the flow of electricity in these planets.
Furthermore, understanding how diamonds behave under extreme conditions could help create clean energy. Scientists have learned that liquid diamond is heavier than solid diamond. This knowledge might help improve fusion energy production, a process that uses tiny diamond capsules to create energy.
