Social Media Companies Must Pay for Harming a Young Person

A court says Meta and YouTube must pay money. They hurt a young person.

Meta owns Facebook and Instagram. YouTube is a video website. Both companies make apps. Young people use these apps many times every day.

The apps have special features. These features make people use them more and more. For example, videos play by themselves. Pictures appear without stopping. These features are not good for young people.

One young person was very sad and sick from using these apps too much. The court decided the companies did this on purpose. The companies knew the apps hurt people. They did not stop.

The court says: Meta and YouTube must pay six million dollars. This is the first time a court says this.

Many people use social media. Many young people spend many hours on phones. The court says companies must be careful. They cannot make apps that hurt people.

This is important news. Companies make very strong apps. Doctors and parents worry. Young people need protection.
