This is part of a large new project from the United States Department of Energy called the Genesis Mission. Following a presidential order, the government aims to use AI to make scientific discoveries faster. The goal is to double the effectiveness of American science and engineering work in the next ten years.
To do this, the government is creating a large network. The Department of Energy connects its 17 national laboratories with universities and private companies. In early 2026, a group called the Genesis Mission Consortium was formed to manage this collaboration. Major technology companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have joined.
The core of the project is the American Science Cloud. This system connects powerful computers, research equipment, and AI tools. Fermilab is providing secure data storage, while Oak Ridge National Laboratory is preparing new computers for calculations.
The initiative focuses on energy, national security, and new discoveries. For example, researchers at the observatory in Chile will use the network to quickly detect cosmic events like exploding stars. In other areas, scientists are creating digital copies of fusion energy machines to test clean energy ideas faster. AI is also being added to particle accelerators to improve their function.
The Department of Energy has provided $293 million for these projects. Energy Secretary Chris Wright compared the mission to historical achievements like the Apollo program. He stated that the project will use national resources to ensure leadership in AI. The mission director described it as a defining moment, creating a system to solve difficult challenges and double research productivity.
