China is preparing to launch a special robotic spacecraft, called Chang'e-7, to search for water ice on the Moon. The launch is planned for August 23 or 24, 2026, using a powerful Long March 5 rocket. The mission will focus on the Moon's south pole, specifically in craters that are always in shadow and extremely cold. Scientists believe these dark areas might contain valuable frozen water.
Chang'e-7 is a complex mission involving four parts: an orbiter, a lander, a rover, and a unique 'hopper' vehicle. After traveling for about a week, the spacecraft will orbit the Moon before the lander attempts a precise landing near Shackleton Crater. Once on the surface, the hopper will be used to explore the permanently shadowed craters. This small flying machine can make large jumps, traveling up to 15 kilometers, to reach different dark areas. It will drill into the lunar soil to collect samples and analyze them for water molecules.
Finding water on the Moon could be very important for future space exploration. It could provide drinking water and fuel for rockets, making the Moon a strategic location.
