In the central Pacific Ocean, water temperatures are rising significantly. New forecasts from Europe's weather experts show temperatures climbing higher each month. In May, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts predicted that sea-surface temperatures could reach about 3°C above normal by late 2026. If this happens, the developing El Niño would match or surpass the strongest events ever recorded, including the 2015-16 super El Niño and the catastrophic 1877-78 event.
A super El Niño means the Pacific is warming at least 2°C above average. The 2026 event would exceed this level. What makes this forecast important is that three major weather systems now agree: the European Centre, NOAA from the United States, and Australia's Bureau of Meteorology all predict a strong El Niño peaking in autumn 2026.
