At King's College London, scientists have discovered something remarkable: three aluminum atoms arranged in a triangle shape can do work that was previously only possible with platinum and other expensive metals. This new compound, called a cyclotrialumane, is the first stable example ever created.
Catalysts are essential in industry. They help chemical reactions happen, and they are used in plastics, fuels, and medicines. For many decades, expensive platinum-group metals have been the only catalysts powerful enough for important reactions. However, these metals are scarce and difficult to extract.
Dr. Clare Bakewell led the research team that decided to try something different: using aluminum, the most abundant metal in Earth's crust. Aluminum is about 20,000 times cheaper than platinum, but it had never worked well as a catalyst before.
The aluminum triangle changed everything. When the researchers tested it, the compound successfully split hydrogen molecules and connected ethene molecules together. These are reactions that have always required expensive precious metals. The triangle remains stable even when dissolved in different liquids, which makes it useful as a catalyst.
The team, including Imogen Squire, Michelangelo Tritto and Matthew de Vere-Tucker, believes this discovery could lead to cleaner and cheaper production of plastics, fuels, and medicines. While the compound currently exists only in tiny amounts, the possibilities are enormous.
