Brown fat exists in infants and remains in smaller amounts in adults. Researchers have wanted to use it to help people with obesity and diabetes burn more calories. This discovery offers a precise target for treatment.
The enzyme TNAP also affects bone health. When TNAP does not work properly, bones become weak. This causes hypophosphatasia, a rare condition that leads to fractures and pain.
The research team identified compounds that could target the glycerol pocket. These drugs might help in two ways: they could increase heat production and burn fat, or they could strengthen weak bones.
