A traveler that left the deep darkness around the time mammoths roamed Earth passed quietly past our planet on Sunday, hidden in the glare of the Sun.
Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) made its closest approach to Earth on April 26, 2026, passing about 45 million miles away. By cosmic standards, this is very close. By human standards, it is the closest most of us will ever come to a true visitor from the Oort Cloud, the vast icy shell that surrounds our Solar System.
Yet for most people on Earth, the comet is essentially invisible. The reason is geometry. At its closest approach, the comet sits only a few degrees from the Sun in our sky, an angle so small that ground telescopes are blinded by daylight. The comet's position has turned what could have been a backyard spectacle into something only spacecraft can see properly. The best view belongs to SOHO's LASCO coronagraph, a joint ESA and NASA instrument stationed about a million miles from Earth.
PanSTARRS is no ordinary comet. It travels on a near-hyperbolic orbit, circling the Sun in the opposite direction from the planets. This profile is the fingerprint of an Oort Cloud comet, a body falling inward from a region so distant it is closer to other stars than to the inner planets. If it returns at all, it would take somewhere between 160,000 and 170,000 years to come back.
The comet rounded the Sun on April 19. Many small comets break apart during such a close encounter, but PanSTARRS held together. For a brief window in mid-April, observers in mid-northern latitudes could spot it low in the pre-dawn east. Now the show belongs to the Southern Hemisphere, where the comet will hang low in the western sky after sunset in the coming days.
