High above the Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and California, something unexpected is happening. Tiny pieces of colored plastic are floating in the air and trapping heat. Unlike carbon dioxide or soot from factories, these microscopic plastic fragments absorb sunlight like small solar panels, warming the atmosphere.
A study published in Nature Climate Change on May 4, 2026, shows that airborne microplastics have a measurable warming effect on Earth. Researchers from Fudan University in Shanghai found that plastic particles contribute about 16% of the warming caused by black carbon, the dark soot from burning fossil fuels.
The research reveals that colored plastics - blues, reds, yellows, and blacks from bottle caps and packaging - absorb sunlight much more strongly than white or transparent ones. When scientists aged these particles with ultraviolet light to simulate weathering in the atmosphere, they discovered that white plastics turn yellow and absorb even more heat.
Above the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the warming effect of plastic particles is actually stronger than that of black carbon. The smallest plastic fragments, invisible under microscopes, stay in the air longer and absorb more sunlight per unit of mass.
These microplastics come from breaking down larger plastic waste, tire wear on roads, and synthetic clothing fibers from washing. They have been found in human blood and Antarctic snow. Current climate models do not yet include this warming effect, so scientists say they need updating.
