Astronomers have finally solved a mystery that has puzzled them for over twenty years. They discovered strange radio signals coming from deep space, bursts of energy that pulsed in steady rhythms. Nobody knew what caused them until now.
Using a powerful radio telescope in Australia called ASKAP, scientists found the answer. The signals come from two stars locked together in a deadly dance. One is a white dwarf, the burned-out core of a dead star, about the size of Earth but as heavy as our Sun. The other is a red dwarf, a small faint star. Together they are called ASKAP J1745−5051.
The white dwarf is pulling material away from its companion star, like a cosmic vampire feeding on its victim. These two objects orbit each other in just over an hour, spinning incredibly fast. As they move, the system releases bursts of radio waves and X-rays every 1.4 hours.
The discovery was led by Kovi Rose, a PhD student at the University of Sydney. The findings were published in Nature Astronomy on 2 June 2026. This system is special because astronomers can finally see both stars and understand what is happening between them. The research involved telescopes from around the world working together, including observations from Chile.
Rose explained that these systems are like natural laboratories. They help scientists understand how matter behaves under extreme conditions. For the first time, astronomers have a clear example to help them decode other similar mysterious signals in space.
