In the dark, high-pressure deep ocean off Brazil's coast, scientists on a research trip discovered 31 new marine species. Using advanced technology, they explored the ocean's twilight zone, an area between 180 and 1,000 meters deep. This part of the ocean is the largest living space on Earth but is difficult to study because of its darkness and extreme conditions.
Previously, scientists used nets to collect sea creatures, but many delicate animals were damaged. This expedition used a remotely operated vehicle named SuBastian with special laser equipment to create 3D models of the animals without touching them. Other tools, including a gravity machine from Stanford University, helped researchers observe how tiny organisms move and interact. They even looked inside living cells while still at sea.
The discoveries included new types of jellyfish, comb jellies, and small creatures called larvaceans. One surprising find was a colonial animal, a siphonophore, which might be a completely new family of species. The team was able to confirm all 31 new species quickly using genetic testing on the ship.
Dr. Karen Osborn, the lead scientist, stated that the midwater is Earth's largest habitat and is full of amazing animals we are just beginning to understand.
