The conflict that started with an attack in October 2023 has caused many deaths. Around 73,000 Palestinians have died during military actions in Gaza. After many years of fighting and a difficult embargo since 2007, there is now a plan to bring peace to the area for its two million people.
On July 30, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an agreement for Hamas to reduce its weapons. This plan was made with the U.S.-led Board of Peace. The agreement says that Hamas will give up its weapons. In return, Israeli soldiers will leave the Gaza Strip.
This is very important. The current conflict began when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people. Since a ceasefire started in January 2026, more than 1,200 Palestinians have died. To stop the killing, negotiators from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States worked for months to find a compromise.
Nickolay Mladenov, a representative for Gaza, said the talks were hard. He mentioned that it was difficult to reach an agreement and that implementation is very important. He stressed that withdrawal must happen at the same time as disarmament.
The plan has specific steps. Giving up weapons is expected to take 200 to 350 days. It will happen in stages. Palestinian police will give up their weapons first. Larger military equipment and tunnels will be removed later. The weapons will be managed by a Palestinian committee, not given to Israel or other countries. International observers will watch to make sure everything is done correctly. Any changes to the plan need approval from all sides and an international group.
A peacekeeping force, the International Stabilization Force, will be sent to the area to help maintain order. They will work with a new Palestinian security team. Hamas, which has controlled Gaza since 2007, has started to prepare. They dissolved their administrative structure to allow for a new governing body. However, Hamas says they will only give up weapons if Israel stops military actions, sends more aid, and removes its troops.
Ghazi Hamad, part of the Hamas team, said the negotiations were difficult but they tried to find a workable solution. He also said they insisted that mediators make sure Israel keeps its promises.
For President Trump, who leads the Board of Peace, this agreement is a success for his peace plan. He said the deal protects Israel's interests while allowing a new Palestinian government to lead Gaza. He explained that as disarmament happens, Israeli forces will leave, and the International Stabilization Force will help a new Palestinian police force keep Gaza safe.
However, there is still a problem. The Israeli government has not officially approved the plan yet. The peace plan is written, but the most difficult part is just beginning.
