The main goal is both scientific and tasty. After returning to Earth, scientists will plant the seeds, observe their growth, and harvest the grapes. If successful, they plan to make the first wine from grapes that have traveled in space. This exciting project started as a university assignment for two engineering students, Arvind Subramanyam and Coby Arnold. They designed a special container to protect the seeds during their journey and ensure they can still grow when they come back.
The grape seeds will travel on a new research facility called TAMU-SPIRIT-1, which acts like a small university campus in space. Dr. Justin Scheiner, a horticulture expert, is leading the study to understand how space affects plant biology. Space radiation can change DNA, and scientists hope these seeds will experience mutations. They chose three types of wine grapes known for their toughness and ability to grow in difficult conditions. One of these, the Lomanto grape, was developed in Texas and is important to the local wine industry.
After six months, the seeds will return to Earth and be planted at a research vineyard. A control group of seeds that stayed on Earth will also be planted nearby. Scientists will compare the growth, fruit production, and genetic changes of the space-traveled vines versus the control group. The results could help develop stronger crops for farmers facing challenging environmental conditions worldwide. The TAMU-SPIRIT-1 facility will also host other experiments, but the space grape seeds are the most fascinating part of the mission, potentially leading to a unique wine born from the stars.
