A three-week-old calf on a ranch in South Texas had a wound on its umbilical cord. When a veterinarian examined it, they found something shocking: the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly whose larvae eat living flesh. The United States had not seen this pest in its livestock for nearly sixty years.
The discovery triggered an immediate response from federal and state authorities. Officials created a 12-mile restricted zone around the ranch in Zavala County and formed an Incident Command Team. They placed movement restrictions on warm-blooded animals and increased border monitoring. Most importantly, they began releasing millions of sterile male flies, a biological control method that had successfully eliminated the pest decades earlier.
The screwworm is dangerous because female flies lay eggs in open wounds, and the larvae burrow into living flesh, potentially killing animals if left untreated. However, female screwworms mate only once, so scientists can sterilize male flies and release them into the wild. When wild females mate with sterile males, their eggs never hatch, and the population eventually collapses.
Texas is the country's largest cattle-producing state, with an industry worth approximately fifteen billion dollars, making this threat economically serious. However, officials reassured the public that screwworms do not infect meat or other food products. As of the announcement, this remained the only confirmed case in the country since 1966. The response underway represents an attempt to prevent what could become a major agricultural crisis.
