Scientists have analyzed genetic material found on the Shroud of Turin, a piece of linen believed by some to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. The fabric, housed in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, bears the faint image of a man. Researchers used samples from 1978 and advanced genomic techniques to identify genetic traces left over hundreds of years. The findings, published in Scientific Reports, revealed DNA from animals like dogs and pigs, plants such as tomatoes and bananas, and even Mediterranean red coral. This suggests the cloth has absorbed biological material from many places and times. The genetic evidence cannot prove the Shroud's authenticity or its age. However, it does show the movement of people. About 40 percent of the human DNA found links to populations from the Indian subcontinent, possibly indicating ancient trade routes. Other traces matched populations from the Near East and Jewish communities. Interestingly, some DNA matched Professor Pierluigi Baima Bollone, who collected the samples in 1978. The presence of plants like potatoes and peppers, which originated in the Americas, proves the cloth absorbed contamination after the 15th century. While some experts question the accuracy of identifying species from degraded material, the study shows how modern science can reveal details about an object's history through environmental exposure.
