On June 18, 2026, the war reached Moscow. Around 200 drones attacked the city, the biggest air attack since the war began in February 2022. The main target was the Gazprom Neft Moscow Oil Refinery, located only 15 kilometers from the Kremlin. The attack caused at least five fires, and the refinery is now completely closed for at least six months due to severe damage.
This attack also affected daily life. Moscow's four main airports stopped all flights for most of the day. Over 170 flights were canceled and more than 110 were delayed, leaving many travelers stuck. Debris from destroyed drones fell on homes and shops, injuring about 17 people, including two children.
Russia claimed its air defenses stopped most drones, but experts say Ukraine's strategy is working. By damaging oil storage and power systems, Ukraine hopes to weaken Russia's ability to fund the war. This has already led to fuel shortages in Russia, especially in Crimea.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack was a fair response to Russian bombings. He warned Russia that if Ukraine burns, Moscow will burn too. Zelenskyy wants Russians to understand the cost of the war.
The drone strikes have made Russians feel less safe. Public support for President Putin has dropped significantly. While some civilians are worried, angry nationalist figures are demanding a stronger military response. Some even suggest using nuclear weapons. In response, Russia has promised to strike Ukrainian power grids and military bases. The attacks show that Moscow is no longer completely safe.
