Scientists have discovered how an ancient Roman cup, made over 1,600 years ago, changes color. The Lycurgus Cup appears green when light shines on it from the front, but turns blood-red when light comes from behind. This amazing effect baffled scientists for many years.
Researchers now believe the Romans accidentally created nanotechnology. They made the cup, which is about 16.5 cm tall, between 290 and 325 AD. Artisans carved a detailed design showing King Lycurgus being punished by the god Dionysus.
The cup's color-changing ability is its most unique feature. The secret was found in 1990 when scientists studied small broken pieces of the glass. Using advanced microscopes, they discovered tiny particles of gold and silver, only 50 to 70 nanometers wide, mixed into the glass.
When light hits these particles, it causes the electrons in the metal to vibrate. This vibration changes the color we see. Scientists think the glassmakers accidentally mixed gold and silver dust into the glass, possibly from a workshop. However, the specific amounts suggest they might have learned to control it without understanding the science.
The cup has a long history, possibly used in religious ceremonies. It eventually ended up in the British Museum in London. Recently, scientists recreated the color-changing effect using modern technology, showing the lasting genius of ancient Roman craftspeople.
